How Much Can A Jeep Grand Cherokee Tow? (Laredo, Laredo E, Upland, Altitude, Limited, Limited X, Trailhawk, Overland, High Altitude, Summit, SRT and Trackhawk)

For 2019 and 2020 there are twelve (yes twelve) Jeep Grand Cherokee models and they all have the ability to tow boats, campers, and trailers, but not all of them have the same towing capacity.

In this article, we will cover everything you need to know to pick out the best Jeep Grand Cherokee for towing what you desire.

How Much Can The Jeep Grand Cherokee Tow?

So, how much can the Jeep Grand Cherokee tow? The towing capacity of the Jeep Grand Cherokee is determined by the engine in your Jeep and the proper towing package. The Grand Cherokee has a towing capacity between 6,200 pounds and 7,200 pounds.

Grand Cherokee Engine Options

The Jeep Grand Cherokee offers several engine options in their current line up. As of the publication of this article, Jeep offers four engine options.

  • 3.6L 3.6-Liter V6 24-Valve VVT Engine
  • 5.7L V8 MDS VVT Engine
  • 6.2L V8 Supercharged Engine
  • SRT® 6.4-Liter HEMI® V8 Engine

As I was going through the specs of each engine on the Jeep website, I found that they provided the most detail on the well known 5.7L engine.

As a result, I thought you may like to see the full specs on this engine.

2019 and 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokees equipped with the 5.7L V* engine are capable of towing 6,800 pounds when properly equipped.

Here’s what Jeep had to say about the 5.7L engine:

Not all Grand Cherokee trim packages offer each engine. We will dig into that part in a moment.

Towing Capacity of a Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, Laredo E, Upland, Altitude, Limited, Limited X, Trailhawk, Overland, High Altitude, and Summit.

When the Grand Cherokee is equipped with the towing package and the 3.6L engine, it has the ability to tow 6,200 pounds.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee models: Laredo, Laredo E, Upland, Altitude, Limited, Limited X, Trailhawk, Overland, High Altitude, and Summit all offer the 3.6L engine as a standard feature.

As a result, each of these models will tow 6,200 pounds when properly equipped.

Towing Capacity of Jeep Grand Cherokees equipped with the 5.7L V8 engine

The Grand Cherokee has the optional 5.7L V8 engine available in the following trim levels: Limited, Limited X, Trailhawk, Overland, High Altitude, and Summit.

When these models are built with the 5.7L engine and the proper towing package, they have a towing capacity of 6,800 pounds.

There are two high-end trim packages that do not offer the 5.7L engine.

These two packages are the SRT and the Trackhawk. Both of these packages offer their own unique engine.

Towing Capacity of a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT

The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT comes standard with the SRT® 6.4-Liter HEMI® V8 Engine. The 6.4L Hemi engine is exclusive to the SRT trim package.

While the SRT is one mean machine, I was curious if you could still tow with the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT. I did a little research and here is what I found.

So, how much can a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT tow? The SRT is capable of towing 7,200 pounds.* However, the Jeep website currently does not show the ability to add the needed Class IV Receiver-Hitch which comes from the factory as standard equipment on many of the Grand Cherokee models.

If you want to tow with a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT, I suggest checking with your dealership. If you don’t have a dealership, I suggest contacting one of the vendors known for offering great prices on new Jeeps.

Towing Capacity of a Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk

Like the SRT model, the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is a speed demon. It also comes with its own unique engine package. The Trackhawk comes with a 6.2L V8 Supercharged Engine.

The 6.2L V8 Supercharged Engine offered in the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk has a maximum towing capacity of 7,200

Also similar to the SRT model, the Trackhawk model does not appear to have the needed Class IV Receiver-Hitch from the factory.

I will have to do a little more research regarding towing with the SRT and Trackhawk, but I am sure it is possible.

With this being said, if you own an SRT or Trackhawk your focus is likely on power and maximum straight-line speed. My guess is towing capacity is not as important as it would be on other trim packages that will serve as the primary family towing vehicle.

Towing A Camper With A Grand Cherokee

This 22-foot camper built by Coleman is a great example of an RV that can be towed by a Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 3.6L or 5.7L V8. It has a weight of 4,448 pounds, it sleeps 3 and has a length of twenty-two feet nine inches.

For good measure, the items above are below the 6,200-pound maximum towing capacity associated with the 3.6L Jeep Grand Cherokee engine.

If you buy a Grand Cherokee that is equipped with the 5.7L (or larger) V* engine, you know that you have a maximum towing capacity of 7,200 pounds.

For this reason, you know you should be able to tow a much larger camper.

As a result, I thought you may like to see this nice 2020 KEYSTONE COUGAR 27SAB camper as an example of what you could tow behind your Grand Cherokee.

This camper from Keystone weighs in a 6,651 pounds and once you put your gear onboard the camper, I bet you will get much closer to the 7,200-pound maximum towing capacity.

Just remember, you never want to exceed your max towing capacity. It can cause a dangerous scenario on the road.

Closing Thoughts

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a classic family vehicle that has tremendous towing capacity to allow you and your family to tow your boat, camper or trailer with you as you go on an adventure.

My friend Michael always had the vision of towing his airstream RV with his classic Jeep Grand Wagoneer. However, before he got it all set up, he purchased a new Grand Cherokee. He loves the Grand Cherokee so much he couldn’t envision towing the airstream with any other vehicle.

Selfishly, I have to admit I am glad he got that new Grand Cherokee because he sold me the 1991 Jeep Grand Wagoneer and it is Vin# …00001.

This means it is the very first 1991 Grand Wagoneer, and 1991 is the last year the Grand Wagoneers were ever produced.

Okay, enough about the classics. I absolutely love the current Grand Cherokee and I can’t wait to see what the Jeep designers come up with in their newest update to be out in the next year or two!
