Using Vinegar to remove rust on Jeep Grand Wagoneer Cargo Floor Metal Strips

Removing Rust with Vinegar

In searching online, I saw many posts and videos about the effectiveness of vinegar for removing rust. I already had a jug of vinegar, so I thought I would give it a try. Worst cast, nothing happens, right? Well, it turned out better than just okay.

Take a look!

The first thing I did was build a trough with plastic, a box, and duct tape.

Then I put the rusted metal strips into the DIY trough (box) and poured the jug of vinegar on top. I did not dilute the vinegar.

To let the vinegar work its magic, I let it sit overnight. I did not time it exactly, but I estimate it soaked for 18 or 19 hours.

Again, I wasn’t sure what would happen, but I am more than pleased with the results given how easy this was to do.

On a side note, it has been a hot summer here in the Carolinas. Clearly, I have some grass to seed this fall!

The one of the left has been washed off with water, but not the two on the right.

Here you can start to see the difference. Can you guess which ones have been washed and which ones have not?rust removal with vinegar, #wagoneer, #Jeep, MyJeepandMe.com

Here is a great “Before & After” type photo. The metal strip on the left was rinsed with water and the one of the right still needs to be sprayed off with water. You can see at the very bottom of the one on the right where I did spray an inch or two to show the difference.rust removal with white vinegar

Hopefully, these pictures will give you the inspiration to try it for yourself. I would say using a jug of vinegar to remove rust from metal was a very simple task. While it is not perfect, it is good enough for a something that will never see daylight. You see, the rust is on the back side of the strips, not the exposed top.
